 PUBLIC ART IN THE CITY OF DANA POINT

The City of Dana Point values art and works hard to ensure that as the City grows, so do the opportunities for public art contributions. Located throughout the City's parks, streets and structures are an assortment of art pieces with styles ranging from classical to modern. Many of them reflecting the City's rich history but all of them contributing to the unique beauty that is Dana Point. In 1994 the City established an Art in Public Places program to incorporate art into new developments. Some of the art shown below are the result of the City's implementation of that program. MULTIPLE FRIEZES

DATE: 2002

LOCATION: Monarch Bay Plaza, 32860-32920 Pacific Coast Highway

ARTIST: Stephen Glassborrow

DESCRIPTION: Multiple friezes are located in the upper niches of the exterior walls.  Wall tiles are installed in relief on the retaining wall at the main entry at the southern end.  The sculptural wall friezes incorporate elements of Michelangelo’s and Rodin’s neo-classical style and are entitled “The Water Carrier,” “Day and Night” and “Sea Horses”.

 

 Strands Mosaic Sidewalk

MOSAIC SIDEWALK

DATE: 2009

LOCATION: Strands Vista Park along the public walkway overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Headlands Development

DESIGNER: Integration Design Studio

DESCRIPTION: This walkway is 1,400 feet long with three ocean overlook areas.  A custom designed technique is used to incorporate mosaic-type designs, surface seeded select aggregates, integral colored pavement, pebbles, colored glass, sea shells, etc. together with fish and other marine life images detailed in the three overlook areas.  The same theme is carried into the low garden walls, located around benches and the park sign.  Starfishes made of bronze are integrated into the low walls.

HISTORIC MURAL

LOCATION: Nature Interpretive Center located at 34558 Scenic Drive

DESCRIPTION: Wall sized mural of rancheros throwing cow hides off the cliff to sailors below.  The mural shows the early history of Dana Point.

 

Veterans Memorial-Eagle

LOCATION: Veterans Memorial located within Strands Vista Park

DESCRIPTION: Two patriotic eagles are on either side of a flagpole base reminding visitors to honor the memory of our fallen heroes.

 

Three Tier Fountain- Neptune Reign

DESCRIPTION: Entitled “Neptune’s Reign, it is a three tiered fountain located at the entrance to the Monarch Bay Resort and is visible from Niguel Road.

 

Two Niche Fountain

TWO NICHE FOUNTAINS:

LOCATION: MONARCH BEACH RESORT, 1 Monarch Resort inside the motor courtyard of the Resort

DESCRIPTION: Named “Gentle Allure” the two niche fountains include sculpture of boys with sea creatures and another sculpture with a sea creature in the center. 

 

Temple

TEMPLE:

DATE: 2001

LOCATION: MONARCH BEACH RESORT, 1 Monarch Resort.  The temple is located within the Botanical Garden, which is behind the resort, and the public trail.

ARCHITECT: Holmes & Narver

DESCRIPTION: Temple of Bliss is a functional art piece that includes six columns with an iron dome for sitting and viewing the surroundings.

DESCRIPTION: Four separate statues each portraying a female figure depicting the coming of each season.

DESCRIPTION: A life sized sculpture, depicting one of the 19th century sailors who used to toss local cowhides from the cliffs to trade for goods from the ships below.

DESCRIPTION: A wood carved mermaid playing a guitar.  It was dedicated to Sandy West, drummer for the Runaways, who died of lung cancer in 2006.

DESCRIPTION: The bronze sculpture is welded to a 6 foot base tall base of black marble.  Inspired by Richard Henry Dana’s memoir “Two Years Before the Mast”, the sculpture recognizes that hardy breed of sailor who worked aloft in fair or foul weather in the 1800’s.

DESCRIPTION: In conjunction with the Festival of Whales parade, the 4’ tall whale tail sculpture is covered in mosaic tiles as part of Ocean Awareness Day on March 14, 2009.

DESCRIPTION: The Mary Ellen Thomas Memorial fountain is located at the south end of the park.  The vertical portion of the fountain features three glass mosaic murals representing sea life off the shore of Dana Point with various local marine species amongst the kelp forest and coral/crustacean incrusted rocks.  Alternating between the murals are three surfer figures cast in relief.  Water flows down from the top of the fountain and around these three figures, roughly simulating waves breaking and splashing over the back of their boards.

DESCRIPTION: Wall mural incorporating unique elements of Dana Point like palm trees, tall ships and also featuring coffee and cycling.
