Building and Safety Division - Skylight Requirements
Planning Department approval, Building Permit and Inspections required.
Skylight Permit Requirements
This permit will allow a new Skylight or a repair of an existing Skylight. The following are the minimum requirements that must be met:
* The zoning at the address must be residential and have only one unit.
* International Conference of Building Officials (I.C.B.O.) # will be required for permit issuance.
* No structural framing members (i.e. roof rafters or ceiling joists, roof truss) may be cut for the skylight installation.
* All plumbing vents must be located ten feet away, or terminate three feet above, an operable skylight.
* All plastic skylights must be located a minimum of four feet apart from each other.
* If valuation exceeds $1,000.00, battery operated smoke detectors shall be installed in each bedroom and hallway adjacent to bedroom and in accordance to C.B.C. Section 310.9.1.3,.4, and .5 .
The Skylight Permit is NOT available Online if you are:
* Cutting structural framing members (i.e. roof rafters or ceiling joists, roof truss) for the skylight installation.
Inspections
Two inspections are required. The first inspection is a rough framing inspection where the skylight is installed and the framing is still exposed. A final inspection should be scheduled after all the work is completed.
